Training of off-shore State employees

  • Since 2004, the Pelagos Sanctuary and the EPHE (School of Advanced Studies, Paris) have been running a training course at the Maritime Prefecture of Toulon. The objectives of this course are :

    • to inform off-shore State employees of the roles of the Pelagos Sanctuary (tripartite agreement, France, Italy and Monaco) for whatever purpose this may serve them in the course of their duties,
    • to bring to their attention the cetacean populations inhabiting this area and their ecological characteristics,
    • and to advise them as to how they can contribute to the improvement of the CIESM (Mediterranean Science Commission) data base and to inform them of the roles of this body in terms of research and conservation.

    List of speakers for the 30th March 2005 session :

    • Prof. Jean Pierre Quignard (University of Montpellier II): Introduction to the Mediterranean
    • Dr. Pierre Beaubrun (EPHE): Cetacean populations in the Mediterranean, scientific observation forms and research projects
    • Mr. Nicolas Vaselli (Port-Cros National Park): Introduction to the Pelagos Sanctuary
    • Capt. Frédéric Capoulade (SNCM) and Pascal Mayol (Souffleurs d'Ecume): Collisions between Commercial Vessels and Large Cetaceans.
