Education and Public Awareness

Communication events for the general public are indispensable in understanding and respecting the natural environment and in bringing to people's awareness their responsibilities in this area. In order to achieve these objectives, Souffleurs d'Ecume receives significant media support, participates in various general public events, and organises conferences.

Operation Nature Ferry

Since 2003, each spring, a group of BTS students (Advanced Vocational Diploma in the Management and Protection of Wilderness areas) board a Corsica-mainland car-ferry. This expedition, along with a series of preliminary lectures in the classroom, introduces the students to the marine environment and Mediterranean cetology (line transect method). The programme consists of an awareness campaign for a select public and different stands are set up by the students for passengers. During the passage, passengers are able to attend conferences and view interactive displays on the topics of Mediterranean cetaceans and limiting the ecological impacts associated with navigation.

Mer en Fête

Since 2002, Souffleurs d'Ecume has been participating in the operation Mer en Fête organised by the association U-Marinu. Aboard a car-ferry, one of our organisers provides a stand for primary school students from Marseille, Ajaccio and Bastia, on the topic of the Scientific Observation of Mediterranean Cetaceans. With the help of a DVD, the children find themselves at the helm of a car-ferry and learn to identify the different species. They note their observations on a simplified form, similar to those used by watchkeeping officers for scientific purposes. Species recognition, and concepts in navigation, meteorology and ecology are all part of this presentation designed for children in Years 2-6.

We organise conferences and exhibitions on the following topics:

  • Dolphins and Whales in the Mediterranean! What are their biological strengths? Endangered animals? How to recognise them and protect them? Can anyone observe them in their natural habitat?
  • Global warming: what do we really know? Can and must we act within our means?

Conferences run for 60-90 mins plus 45 mins question time.
Conference fee: €200 + travel expenses (€0.60/km from Brignoles).
